Nocto’s JK:JA Skinning Tutorial

This tutorial was written many years ago and I have not revised it since it was last published. The purpose of this post is therefore primarily archival.

Nocto Skinning Tutorial

Note: Before we begin, I know that some poeples mix up skinning and modeling. so just to be sure, here is a quick definition of both.
-Modeling is the art of Shaping, creating something in 3D.
-Skinning is the art of painting a model, giving it textures.

Another thing before we begin, the two files below are must-have if you want to skin

ModView: http://jediknight3.filefront.com/file/Mo….%3Cli%3EModView

Pakscape: http://eliteforce2.filefront.com/file/PakScape_V_011;1327

That said, we can begin.

Step 1

Alright, First, We will create a folder on our desktop (or anywhere else) for our Skinning, Call it whatever you want but for the means of the tutorial, we will call it “JKA Skinning”.

1. In you “JKA Skinning” folder, create another folder called “Base”.

2. In this folder, create one called “Models”, the “s” is important

3. And finally, in this folder, create another one called “Players”, again, the “s” is important.

Now, your Skinning Folder is almost done and you can soon start skinning. But first you need one more file called “_humanoid”
to get this file, follow the steps bellow.

1. Right-click on the “start” button, and then click “explore”.

2. Go on “Local Disk (C:)

3. Get in the folder called “Program Files”

4. In this folder look for the folder called “LucasArt”

5. Get in “Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy” folder then in “Gamedata”, then in “Base”

6. Now find and Open the file called “Assets1.pk3”, in there, get in “Models” then “Players”. Copy Paste the first file at the top called “_Humanoid” in the “Players” folder of your “JKA Skinning”

You are ready to skin
I will teach you how in the next steps.

Step 2

Now you need a Model to skin on, for the Tutorial, we will take the Model “Reborn”

1. Do the same Process you took to get the “_Humanoid” folder (see in Step 1), but this time look for the folder called “Reborn”.

2. Once you find it, Copy Paste it in your “Players” folder.

Now you have your model, first we will give it a name, for the tutorial, it will simply be “Noct_Reborn”

1. Once you renamed your folder “Reborn” to “Noct_Reborn”, get in the folder and find the file called “model_default.skin”

2. Open this file with NotePad. You should see this:

hips,models/players/reborn/forc_legs.tga
hips_torso,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
torso,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
torso_l_shoulder,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
torso_r_shoulder,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
r_arm,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
r_hand,models/players/reborn/forc_hand.tga
r_hand_wrist,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
r_hand_cap_r_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_arm_cap_r_hand_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_arm_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
l_hand,models/players/reborn/forc_hand.tga
l_hand_wrist,models/players/reborn/forc_torso.tga
l_hand_cap_l_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm_cap_l_hand_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_head_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_l_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_r_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
head,models/players/reborn/forc_hood.tga
head_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
head_eyes_mouth,models/players/imperial/mouth_eyes.tga
head_face,models/players/reborn/forc_face.tga
torso_cowelbase,models/players/reborn/forc_hood.tga
hips_cap_l_leg_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_cap_r_leg_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_leg,models/players/reborn/forc_boots_hips.tga
l_leg_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_leg,models/players/reborn/forc_boots_hips.tga
r_leg_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_flaps,models/players/reborn/forc_flap.tga

3. Now, you need to rename all the “Reborn” to “Noct_Reborn”,
It will give you this:

hips,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_legs.tga
hips_torso,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
torso,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
torso_l_shoulder,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
torso_r_shoulder,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
r_arm,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
r_hand,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_hand.tga
r_hand_wrist,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
r_hand_cap_r_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_arm_cap_r_hand_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_arm_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
l_hand,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_hand.tga
l_hand_wrist,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_torso.tga
l_hand_cap_l_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm_cap_l_hand_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_head_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_l_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_r_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
head,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_hood.tga
head_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
head_eyes_mouth,models/players/imperial/mouth_eyes.tga
head_face,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_face.tga
torso_cowelbase,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_hood.tga
hips_cap_l_leg_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_cap_r_leg_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_leg,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_boots_hips.tga
l_leg_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_leg,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_boots_hips.tga
r_leg_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_flaps,models/players/noct_reborn/forc_flap.tga

NOTE: Never touch the lines ending by “/stormtrooper/caps.tga”
these must NOT be changed.

Repeat the Process for the “model_blue.skin” and “model_red.skin” if you want team skins, if you dont, delete them.

Step 3

Now you will have to re-texture/color each pictures to your liking. I will not explain how to do this but note that you can do this with painting programs as paint (it comes with your PC), GIMP (Free painting tools that you can download) or Photoshop (cost money).

After you are done with your picture save it to what you want, for the tutorial it will be “Noct_***”

1. when you are done with a picture, save it.

2.get into “model_default.skin” and rename the picture you just made to the name you saved it.

3. when you are done with all pictures, it should give you this:

hips,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_legs.tga
hips_torso,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
torso,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
torso_l_shoulder,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
torso_r_shoulder,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
r_arm,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
r_hand,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_hand.tga
r_hand_wrist,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
r_hand_cap_r_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_arm_cap_r_hand_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_arm_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
l_hand,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_hand.tga
l_hand_wrist,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_torso.tga
l_hand_cap_l_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm_cap_l_hand_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_arm_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_head_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_l_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
torso_cap_r_arm_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
head,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_hood.tga
head_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
head_eyes_mouth,models/players/imperial/mouth_eyes.tga
head_face,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_face.tga
torso_cowelbase,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_hood.tga
hips_cap_l_leg_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_cap_torso_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_cap_r_leg_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
l_leg,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_boots_hips.tga
l_leg_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
r_leg,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_boots_hips.tga
r_leg_cap_hips_off,models/players/stormtrooper/caps.tga
hips_flaps,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_flap.tga

Note: Don’t change the ending “.tga”, it is important that it stays like this.

Note: The tutorial was made with the model “Reborn” but you might want to start off with the model “Cultist” which is easier.

-Edit-
If you want to remove a part of the model, you need to replace everything except the beginning by *Off

Exemple, if you want to remove the hands of your character you will do as follow:
r_hand,models/players/noct_reborn/noct_forc_hand.tga
-will become-
r_hand,*Off

Your right hand will be removed, do the same thing to the other hand and it will disappear too. It works for any part of the model.

Note that it doesnt literally *remove* the part but turn it invisible, texture-less. So for exemple, taking off the hands, will mean that your saber or any other weapon will appear to be floating.

If it isnt clear, post below or PM me

-End of Edit-

You are now done, Before going to the next step, be sure to get rid of any unused files, it will lower the size of your file at the end. Some files are really important
-“model_default.skin”
-“model.glm”
-“sounds.cfg” (if you remove this, your Skin wont do any sounds)

One more step and you are done.

Step 4

you are done with your skin, only thing left to do is to put it in a “.pk3” file.

1. Open Pakscape and click on “File” and then “New”

2. In your new “.Pk3”, create a folder called “Models”

3. Go in this folder and create another Folder called “Players”

4. In this folder copy your “Noct_Reborn”

5. Save your file. It is important you save it under the format
Quake 3 Pak (*.Pk3), or else it wont work.

Your “Noct_Reborn.pk3” done all you need to do is copy this file into the “Base folder of your “Jedi Knight Jedi Academy” Folder like you would for .PK3s you download on Jk2files.com or other places.

This Done you can go try it out.
